According to reports, Antonio Cunningham, 29, got into an argument with his girlfriend at their home on Woodland Drive Monday night. After refusing to let her leave, the girlfriend managed to escape but was shot by Cunningham while trying to run away. Her injuries were not life threatening officials say, so she returned to the home for her 3-year-old son. Again, Cunningham would not let them leave.

When she escaped once more, the girlfriend called deputies from a neighbor’s home. Deputies say that Cunningham then took off with the child in the mother’s white Honda before they could arrive.

Investigators were able to contact Cunningham and he arranged to have the child picked up by relatives on Meeting Street, according to reports. The child was found safe a short time later.

Deputies then spotted Cunningham near Paladin Road and took him into custody following a brief foot chase.

Officials say the child is being cared for by relatives, and the mother is being treated for her injuries. Detectives say the investigation is ongoing and charges have not yet been determined.
