MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Police say a man accused of killing a woman in Charlotte has been arrested in Myrtle Beach.
Humberto Alvarez Mendoza, 44, was arrested Friday.
He is accused of killing Nia Hantzopoulos and stuffing her body inside the trunk of her vehicle.
Police found the vehicle parked at a popular shopping center in Ballantyne a few days after Hantazopoulos’ husband reported her missing.
Police have not released the relationship between Mendoza and Hantazopoulos. A search warrant in the case says video surveillance shows the two were seen at a Goodwill and both left the store at the same time. However, Hantazopoulos’ husband called police after she never returned home.
Investigators say they identified Mendoza from the video and spoke with his roommate on Monday. The roommate claimed he helped Mendoza load a heavy object that was wrapped in a white sheet into the trunk of a vehicle.
Mendoza is accused of leaving town a short time later. He has been charged with first degree murder.
