Man Takes Plea Deal In Newton Guidance Counselor’s Murder Case

NEWTON, N.C. — The man accused of kidnapping, murdering and sexually assaulting a school guidance counselor in Newton enters a guilty plea.

Sharman Odom pleaded guilty to killing 31-year-old Maggie Daniels in her apartment in 2014.  He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The warrants in the case revealed that investigators found makes around Daniels’ neck that were consistent with being strangled.

Several items inside her home were also out of place or damaged making police believe there was a struggle. Officials also found several curly black hairs under Daniels’ nails and throughout the home that were not consistent with her hair.

Police also talked to a witness who claimed Odom showed them pictures of Daniels from her social media accounts and claimed he wanted to ‘get with’ her.

The warrants also claim that Odom was the only person in the case that refused to provide DNA samples because he ‘did not trust law enforcement.’
