A Look At Debby’s Damage In Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC — Flooded creeks leading to flooded roads, toppled trees leading to downed power lines, and kids being kids. Charlotte saw a little bit of everything on Thursday.

For 8-year-old Tiffany Bunjang, Thursday morning was one of the most terrifying of her life. She was playing with her brother in the living room when this tree fell onto her house in west Charlotte. A piece of the ceiling hit Tiffany on the head.

“I was covering myself with the blankets because I was scared,” said Bunjang.

Around the same time is when a tree was pulled from its roots, narrowly missing a south Charlotte home but taking power lines on its way down. At it’s peak, more than 20,000 homes lost power, according to Duke Energy.

Vikram Kumar was working from his Queens Road home when he heard a tree come crashing down and the power lines with it.

“I heard this big boom. I knew something had gone down. I turned my head, and there it was. My median was on fire,” explained Kumar.

There was plenty of rain to keep that fire at bay, too much rain. It caused creeks along Charlotte to overflow including Stewart Creek in West Charlotte.

“The water was two feet on top of the bridge,” John Wendell with Charlotte Storm Water Services took this video of

The day wasn’t a total washout for a group of high school students. Instead of riding bikes along the McAlpine Creek Greenway, they floated down it.
