Hot Start to Workweek, Cooler Air Lurks Ahead
Models are pointing toward a sluggish rainmaking system sitting over the Carolinas by the end of the week.
August’s second weekend is coming to a beautiful close as we put the “sun” in Sunday this afternoon. Near-average highs in the upper 80s and 70s carry into the workweek, but big changes arrive as we head into the heart of the month. Enjoy a beautiful Monday as sunny skies and winds out of the northeast will allow for a slight drop in humidity. High pressure to our northwest will do its best to push a stalled front draped across the Carolinas eastward, but it may not be enough to keep the WCCB Charlotte viewing area completely rain-free. The front may lurch back to the northwest on Tuesday, bumping up humidity, cloud-coverage, and rain chances for the second day of the workweek.
Isolated showers and storms may get going to the south of the Metro, but the majority of our area will remain dry on Wednesday and Thursday. Winds will largely remain out of the northeast, keeping highs below average in the mid-80s around the Piedmont and Foothills in spite of the abundant sunshine. Unfortunately, things may get messy by Friday as a slow-moving area of low pressure will push in from the northwest. Clouds and scattered showers appear likely as we head into the weekend; highs may struggle to get out of the 70s across the board.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to monitor a disturbance well east of the Caribbean. This developing system now has a 90% of becoming Tropical Storm Ernesto over the next seven days; it will likely earn the fifth name of the season by Tuesday evening. Future Ernesto doesn’t appear to be a direct threat to the Carolinas anytime soon as most models have it curving out to sea by next weekend after harassing the Caribbean. We’ll keep you weather-wise if anything changes.
