CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cam Newton underwent successful right rotator cuff surgery on Thursday, according to Carolina Panthers team officials.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Pat Connor at Carolinas Medical Center.
As part of his rehabilitation, Newton will be unable to throw for 12 weeks and will not throw with the team for 16 weeks.
Officials say Newton will be involved in meetings and field sessions when off season work outs begin on April 17th. Newton is expected to be ready for training camp in July.
On Wednesday, Coach Ron Rivera said Newton needed to regain his confidence following a disappointing 2016 season.
“It was shook,”said Rivera. “Let’s be honest. I’m not going to lie about that. The young man went through a tough time and we went through a tough time.”
“Why? Because of the injuries we incurred on the offensive line. That was probably the biggest thing. It just kind of shows the importance and significance of protecting your quarterback.”
