Close to 100 Speak Out at CMS Public Hearing on Student Assignment
CHARLOTTE, NC – Parents passionately spoke out Tuesday night about proposed student assignment changes.
At the meeting, we learned the plan will affect more than 7,000 students in 45 CMS schools.
Parents showed support and opposition for a proposal that would pair elementary schools in order to increase diversity.
“This is an idea. Not a plan. And our children deserve better than that,” Lecil Sullivan said at the hearing.
Paired schools would include Cotswold & Billingsville Elementary, Dilworth & Sedgefield Elementary, along with Nathaniel Alexander Elementary & Moorehead STEM Academy.
“One never knows what this change may bring. There maybe new opportunities for growth,
understanding, and so many possibilities,” Christine Padgett said at the hearing.
One shared concern though is resources and providing enough staffing and support for the combined schools.
“We believe that a commitment around funding and staffing allowing us to provide great leadership at the school will truly make a difference,” Kelly Hoce said.
