Human Remains Found In Avery County Believed To Be Man Missing Since April

AVERY COUNTY, NC — Deputies believe they have found the remains of a man reported missing back in April.

Officials say they are confident the body is that of George Richardson, but a positive identification could take months.

According to reports, a search has been underway for Richardson since a cabin caught fire in the Harper’s Creek area on April 15th. Officials say Richardson was the last person known to be at the cabin, but could not be located at the time.

On Monday, investigators say human remains were located during another search in the area. According to reports, the body could not be positively identified at the scene, but articles consistent with those belonging to Richardson were also found near the remains.

Officials say over 1800 man hours have been put into searching the area, including the use of more than 100 people from multiple agencies at different times. Nearly a half-dozen search warrants for financial, cell, and other records, nearly a half-dozen certified dogs, and forensic scientists from Western Carolina University were also used during the search and investigation.

β€œThis has been a county-wide effort which has stretched all available resources to the maximum level but it shows what can be accomplished when groups work together.”, Sheriff Frye added. β€œI wish to extend our heartfelt prayers and condolences for all that the Richardson family is going through at this difficult time.”
