VANCOUVER (AP) β€” The U.S. women are atop the soccer world today following their 5-2 rout of Japan in the Women’s World Cup championship, their third World Cup crown but first since 1999. The Americans scored early and often with four goals in the opening 16 minutes — three by Carli Lloyd in the fastest hat trick in Women’s World Cup history — in avenging a loss to Japan in the 2011 title game.

WASHINGTON (AP) β€” The Washington Nationals completed a three-game sweep of the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants with a 3-1 win last night. Wilson Ramos broke a tie with a sixth inning home run and added a RBI single in the eighth. Jordan Zimmermann held the Giants to one run on three hits in his seven innings.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) β€” Seattle rookie Mike Montgomery nearly pitched his third straight shutout in pitching the Mariners past the Oakland Athletics 2-1. Montgomery was trying to join Randy Johnson as the only players in franchise history to pitch three consecutive shutouts, but Sam Fuld homered in the third for the A’s only run.

LOS ANGELES (AP) β€” The Los Angeles Lakers say they plan to sign guard Lou Williams, last season’s Sixth Man of the Year, and forward Brandon Bass. Williams averaged a career-high 15.5 points and helped Toronto win a franchise-record 49 games last season.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) β€” Danny Lee parred the second hole of a four-man playoff to win The Greenbrier Classic. The South Korean-born New Zealander is the ninth first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season.
