Keith Scott Family Speaks Out on One Year Anniversary
CHARLOTTE, NC– “He had so much to live for, he had, look at his children look at our family, we had a 27-year life,” said widow Rakeyia, Scott.
The Scott family says they are still in mourning and they aren’t alone. Charlotte Uprising gathered for a vigil at the apartment complex where CMPD Officer Brentley Vinson shot and killed Keith Scott one year ago.
“The officers were able to go home and be with their family, but my husband wasn’t able to come home and be with his family,” said Scott.
People also gathered in Uptown Charlotte. Clergy, city officials, and protesters marched around Uptown remembering the shooting and the days of protests and riots that followed.
“It brings back memories a lot of memories and just shows we do need a lot of change,” said protester, Meko McCarthy.
Scott family attorney Justin Bamberg says though CMPD released much of the Citizen Review Board’s recommendations for police, they didn’t release everything that lead to the first tie ever on a review board appeal.
“You and the citizens watching should ask yourselves why is it that the city would be afforded the opportunity to pick and choose that which they want you to know,” said Bamberg.
Rakeyia Scott says she wants to see more changes at CMPD, like better training.
“Having faith in the police department, no I don’t have that, do I see any changes, no I don’t,” said Scott.
