NEWLAND, NC – A person believed to have been swept away during Hurricane Helene has been found dead, six months after the storm.
The Avery County Sheriff’s Office says a crew doing debris clean-up found the remains along the North Toe River on Friday.
The Sheriff’s Office believes the remains belong to a camper reported missing from the Buck Hill Campground in Newland during Helene.
The remains are being sent to the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh.
Helene is blamed for six deaths in Avery County. One storm victim remains missing.
