Rainy relief ahead

A few heavy, gusty storms are possible Sunday evening, but the overall severe threat remains low.

April’s first weekend is off to a steamy start as the Queen City tied a record high this Saturday afternoon at 88°. Friday and Saturday have made up our hottest two-day stretch of the year so far, but some much-needed rainy relief lies ahead. A slow-moving cold front will slug across the Carolinas by Sunday evening, bringing scattered showers and storms as we wind down the weekend. Rain chances are certainly a welcome sight, but we’ll want to watch for a few heavy, gusty storms as the sun sets; the overall severe threat remains low. Despite the increasing clouds ahead of the rain, highs should still push well into the 80s across the Piedmont and Foothills Sunday afternoon.

Rain chances linger through Monday morning before slowly clearing to the east by the afternoon. Most communities will see 1-2″ of rain through noon Monday. Much cooler air rushes in behind the moisture as highs struggle to clear 60° in the Piedmont and Foothills on Tuesday. We’ll want to watch for widespread frost and freeze Tuesday night as lows dip into the 20s and 30s across the board. Temperatures will bounce back near 70° by the end of next week as another disturbance approaches from the northwest.
