NORTH CAROLINA, U.S. – A new survey conducted by MattressNextDay has revealed North Carolina residents are struggling to meet recommended sleep guidelines and are facing sleep disruptions.
Based on findings from a national survey*, North Carolina residents average only 6.38 hours of sleep per night, falling short of the seven-hour minimum recommended by the Sleep Foundation.
Notably, sleep time increases slightly on weekends to 6.73 hours as many North Carolina residents attempt to catch up on rest.
Some standout findings:
- 77% of residents wake up to use the restroom
- 19% blame overheating
- 48% stream shows before bed, risking sleep quality
Bedtime Trends and Sleep Interruptions
The report also examined bedtime habits and alarmingly found that 1 in 5 (20%) of North Carolina residents do not maintain a regular bedtime even during weekdays.
Sleep interruptions are another area of concern, with respondents waking up an average of 2.95 times each night.
Top causes include trips to the restroom (77%), room being too hot (19%), thirst (18%), bad dreams (14%) and person you’re sleeping next to waking you up (14%).
What do you believe are the reasons for waking up during the night?
The report also highlights that nearly 1 in 4 (23%) reported never feeling fully rested upon waking.
Nightly Routines and Screen Time Impact
Even with widespread advice against screen use before bed, the report reveals that 48% of respondents continue to watch TV or stream shows as a nightly routine, impacting their quality of sleep.
What do you rely on most to help you unwind before bed?
“This report is an eye-opener for understanding how screen time, inconsistent sleep schedules, and lifestyle factors contribute to America’s sleep challenges,” says Martin Seeley, Senior sleep expert at MattressNextDay.
