Repairs begin on East Charlotte home where four officers were killed in a shootout
CHARLOTTE, NC – It’s been almost a year since four officers were killed in a shootout on Galway Drive. The shootout left the home with major damage and multiple code violations. WCCB visited the home Tuesday afternoon and saw a contractor working in the front.
Renters were living in the home on Galway Drive when a US Marshal Task Force attempted to serve a warrant back on April 29th, 2024. The suspect did not comply, triggering a more than three hour long stand off. The suspect shot at officers injuring eight and killing four. The suspect was also killed. While trying to stop the suspect, police used several tools including a SWAT vehicle that neighbors say rammed into the home.
The incident left a gaping hole in the front of the home and multiple homes in the neighborhood damaged. Most insurance policies exclude coverage for damage caused by government or public authority. We searched the City of Charlotte’s code violation system. Records show a case was opened for the home a few days after the April 29 ambush. The case remains open with 52 code violations. The latest action was on April 17th, 2025 when code enforcement sent the owners a civil penalties letter.
When our crew visited the house on Tuesday, we could see some repairs have started. We emailed the City of Charlotte to find out if the repairs satisfy the open code violations. We have not heard back yet.
Public records show the property owners live in North Charlotte. WCCB contacted the owners to ask about the repair process, the costs of the repairs and when the Galway Drive house may go back on the rental market but have not yet heard back.
