Suspect Arrested After Threatening To Kill His Ex-Wife, A Sterling Elementary School Employee

CMPD says Isaac Burch, 37, was arrested Monday evening on a fugitive warrant from Michigan. According to police, Burch had threatened to come to North Carolina to kill his ex-wife, a Sterling Elementary School employee.

Burch’s truck was located outside a North Division hotel, according to officials, and then he was taken into custody a short time later.

CMS released the following statement Tuesday:

“Sterling Elementary will re-open on a normal schedule tomorrow, Wednesday October 11, 2017 and we look forward to seeing all Sterling Elementary students, teachers and staff.

The safety and security of all CMS students and staff is top priority every day. CMS takes every potential threat seriously and responds with an abundance of caution and as needed to ensure the security, safety and well-being of all students and staff.

On the afternoon of Monday, October 9, 2017 Kannapolis Police notified CMS of a heightened possible safety and security risk at Sterling Elementary stemming from a domestic situation involving a Sterling Elementary staff member. Out of an abundance of caution and based on information from law enforcement officials, CMS District and Sterling Elementary leadership made the decision to close Sterling Elementary on Tuesday, October 10.

During the evening of October 9, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested a fugitive whom they had reason to believe posed a potential safety and security risk to CMS students and personnel at Sterling Elementary. The individual remains in custody pending extradition.

On the morning of October 10, law enforcement officials notified CMS that there is no continuing safety and security risk at Sterling Elementary.

CMS cannot identify the staff member involved or provide further details on the nature of the domestic dispute in order to protect personnel privacy.

CMS directs inquiries about the on-going investigation to local law enforcement in Michigan.

Law enforcement has conducted a thorough check of Sterling Elementary buildings and grounds. Counseling and protective staff are in place at Sterling Elementary and ready to support any student, family member or staff seeking assistance.

We look forward to seeing students and staff tomorrow, Wednesday October 11, 2017 on a normal schedule at Sterling Elementary.”

CHARLOTTE, NC — The suspect being investigated for possible threats against a local elementary school has been taken into custody.

CMS Police have advised that the subject of investigation of a possible safety threat at Sterling Elementary is in custody thanks to the work of multiple law enforcement agencies. As a precautionary measure, Sterling Elementary will remain closed tomorrowTuesday, Oct 10th as officers complete their investigation. CMS will update families and staff on scheduling for Sterling Elementary for Wednesday, October 11 as soon as possible.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools says Sterling Elementary School will remain closed Tuesday, October 10th due as a precaution.

Earlier this evening, CMS sent the following message regarding an active police investigation:

“The safety of students, staff and all school personnel is top priority. Out of an abundance of caution and after consultation with law enforcement authorities in an ongoing investigation, Sterling Elementary is closed on Tuesday, Oct 10 for all students, staff and personnel.  We are unable to provide further details at this time as this is an active investigation and will provide an update to Sterling Elementary families and staff for the Wednesday schedule as soon as possible.”
