Discussion:
A weak non-tropical low lifting up the Carolina coast today is pulling in deep tropical moisture. This will keep showers in the forecast for much of the day, with pockets of heavier rain possible south and east of I-85. Charlotte may see .50-1” with higher totals east. Rain ends tonight, but by Friday as the low moves away from the NC coast, a cold front approaches from the northwest. Ahead of it, heat and humidity build with highs near 90. Daytime heat will trigger scattered afternoon storms Friday, mainly in the mountains and foothills. A complex of storms may drift in Friday evening from Tennessee, so that wil be something to watch.
Saturday brings a better severe threat as a cold front stalls near the region. Strong instability due to high heat (highs near 90) and plenty of moisture, along with pockets of stronger upper level winds, support damaging wind potential with afternoon and evening storms. Next week, this pattern locks in with multiple upper level disturbances swinging through. With plenty of moisture and energy in place, we’ll keep daily afternoon and evening storm chances through midweek. Highs stay in the mid-to-upper 80s with muggy evenings as lows only fall into the upper 60s.
