CHARLOTTE, N.C. – – NC MedAssist, a non-profit free pharmacy for low-income, uninsured North Carolinians, is set to host the NC MedAssist Pancakes & Beer 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, November 4 at 9:00 am in SouthEnd. The start/finish will be at The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (4150 Yancey Road, Charlotte, NC 28217).
Race participants will enjoy beer as well as pancakes and bacon, prepared by Sauceman’s, at the completion of the race.
“NC MedAssist is raising awareness and funds for their Free Pharmacy Program supporting low-income, uninsured patients through the NC MedAssist Pancakes & Beer 5K Run/Walk,” stated 5K Committee Chair and Board Member Erika Peterfy . “We are looking forward to an extremely fun and successful event! What other race ends with a celebration at a brewery with pancakes and bacon?” Race participants can also earn VIP status by raising $400 to provide prescription medications to two NC MedAssist patients for a full year.”
The 5K race is open to all ages and fitness levels. Race participants will receive a pint of beer (21 and over), a pancake and bacon breakfast, an official race t-shirt, a commemorative race pint glass, and the top three runners in each age group will be recognized. In addition, teams and VIPs will receive prizes and recognition. Those interested in registering as a team or individual are encouraged to register at www.RunNCMedAssist.com.
For those registered, packet pick up will take place at Sauceman’s (228 West Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203) on Friday, November 3 from 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm where participants will enjoy live music and a pulled pork sandwich with a purchase of beer. Participants can also pick up their packets on race morning at The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery starting at 8:00 am. “NC MedAssist will dispense over $48.5 million dollars in prescription medication this fiscal year alone,” stated Executive Director Lori Giang. “Through the generous support of our community we are able to meet the needs of every eligible patient that requests our assistance. Our organization provides life-saving medication to those who so desperately need it but simply can’t afford it. Currently there are 463,000 people in North Carolina who are both low-income and uninsured.
Events like the NC MedAssist Pancakes & Beer 5K Run/Walk raise funds to allow us to purchase generic medications, but offer free of charge to our patients.”
NC MedAssist serves over 15,550 patients across North Carolina. In fiscal year 2017, NC MedAssist distributed over 134,000 90-day prescriptions to patients enrolled in its Free Pharmacy Program. For more information on NC MedAssist, please visit www.medassist.org.
