Summer swells into weekend

While a few heavy storms will pop up in the afternoons ahead, most communities remain dry through the majority of the weekend.

Happy Friday! We’ll likely crack 90° – and then some – in the Queen City for a 12th straight afternoon today as sunny skies and southwesterly winds keep summer’s blowtorch fixed on the Carolinas. While a few heavy storms may pop up in the afternoon, especially to the north and west of the Metro, most locations remain dry for this final day of the workweek. The torrid pattern continues into the weekend as stray-to-isolated afternoon showers and storms will be the only forms of scant relief from the heat. Highs will top out closer to 80° in the High Country through the weekend.

If you’re sick of the heat, there could be a tidbit of good news in the forecast for you. High pressure will build to our north by Tuesday afternoon, which could bring some brief relief from the heat and humidity for the second day of the workweek ahead, but it’s unlikely highs dip much below 90° around the Metro over the next seven days. Expect the hot, humid, and stormy pattern to pick up again by midweek as some tropical moisture hangs over the Southeast.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is no longer tracking an area of low pressure over the northern Gulf for development, but heavy rain is still in the forecast for much of the central Gulf coast. Some of this remnant moisture may make it into the Carolinas by the start of the workweek. While we won’t see any widespread organized storm activity, this extra “juice” could strengthen any storms that fire up next week.
