Man Arrested After Fatal Hit And Run In Steele Creek

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say they arrested a man involved in a fatal hit and run Wednesday night in southwest Charlotte.

Investigators say 49-year-old Michael Denny was found lying off the right side of Shopton Road West in a grassy area.  Denny was pronounced dead on the scene.

The vehicle involved in the accident failed to stop, according to police.  After an investigation, officials determined that Timothy Medley was impaired and driving his 2006 Kia Sorento down Shopton Road West from South Tryon Street when he struck Denny.

Police say a witness played an instrumental role in the quick apprehension of the suspect.  This witness had been driving to a local store when he first observed the victim walking along the side of the street, according to a news release.

Upon returning from the store, the witness noticed a shoe in the roadway. A short distance away, on Pilcher Drive, this witness then observed the suspect’s 2006 Kia Sorento which was parked in the street. The vehicle had sustained considerable damage and had broken down in the roadway because of the collision. The witness realized what had occurred and immediately returned to the scene where he located the victim and called 911. Without his willingness to become involved it is doubtful that the victim would have been located tonight and the suspect may have escaped justice.

Medley has been charged with felony death by vehicle, felony hit and run and driving while impaired.  Police say speed was not a contributing factor in this crash, however, Medley’s alcohol impairment was. This section of Shopton Road West is not lit with overhead street lights and there are no sidewalks on either side of the roadway.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Detective Reibold at 704-432-2169. The public can also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or visit the Crime Stoppers mobile app website at http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/
