Lenoir Man Indicted After Allegedly Shooting His Friend Accidentally In 2016

CALDWELL COUNTY, NC — A Grand Jury indicted Matthew Phillips Monday in connection to a September 2016 shooting.

Phillips, 29, is charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, according to the indictment. Deputies say the charges stem from a shooting on September 10, 2016.

According to reports, Phillips allegedly shot 26-year-old Jaron Soots accidentally while the two men were cleaning their handguns at Phillips’ home around 7pm. Phillips was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center, but later died from his injuries.

Deputies say Phillips turned himself in on December 7, 2017, and was placed under a $10,000 secured bond.
