Rollercoaster temps ahead

Two cold fronts over the next five days will lead to some wild temperature swings through next week.

Happy Friday! Our final day of the workweek is off to a soggy start as a cold front slices through the Carolinas, but we’ll largely dry out as we head into the afternoon. While you shouldn’t expect a stunner by any stretch of the imagination – mostly cloudy skies hang around through much of the day – highs will be much more manageable as they struggle to top out much above 80° both today and tomorrow. We’ll need to watch out for scattered showers at times this weekend, but most communities remain dry far more often than not as afternoon temperatures return to the upper 80s across the Piedmont and Foothills Sunday afternoon.

A second cold front arrives by the start of the workweek, but the warmth continues through Monday as highs return to the upper 80s around the Metro. The real cooldown doesn’t arrive until Tuesday, but when it does, you’ll certainly feel it. Highs will once again struggle to clear the 60s and 70s across the board between Tuesday and Thursday as lows dip into the 50s and 60s for most; upper 40s are on the table for portions of the High Country on both Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Not only will this incoming front cool us down, but it will also dry us out. Rain chances appear few and far between for much of next week.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) now pegs Hurricane Erin as a low-end Category 1 this Friday morning as it swirls away to the northeast. While rip currents remain an issue for beachgoers through Saturday, Erin will become less and less of an issue for the Carolinas this weekend. With Erin moving out of the picture, it’s time to focus more on other potential storms in the Atlantic; the NHC is currently monitoring three areas for development. None of these three potential systems will threaten the mainland U.S. over the next seven days, but it’s looking increasingly likely that we’ll see Fernand and Gabrielle form somewhere in the open Atlantic by early next week; Fernand may organize just northeast of the Caribbean by this Friday afternoon.
