Panthers Release Statement After NFL Fines Richardson $2.75M In Workplace Misconduct Investigation

The NFL has fined former Panthers owner Jerry Richardson $2.75 million following an investigation into workplace misconduct, according to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Former U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White conducted the independent investigation and submitted her findings to the NFL.

The Panthers released the following statement Thursday afternoon:

“The Carolina Panthers recently received notice from the NFL that its investigation into workplace misconduct is complete. We cooperated throughout the investigation and have taken proactive steps to address any misconduct. While the investigation has concluded, we remain committed to improving all facets of our organization and fostering an environment in which all of our staff can trust they are safe and valued.”Β 

Richardson was accused of sexual assault in three cases and he was accused of using a racial slur toward a team scout in a separate incident.

According to NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy, the NFL has taken over the investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct by Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson.

The NFL will obtain outside counsel and the specifics of the allegations have not been disclosed.

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Carolina Panthers today announced it has commenced an internal investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct against the team’s owner and founder, Jerry Richardson.Β The investigation is being led by the outside international law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart and Sullivan, LLP, and will be overseen by limited owner and former White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles.

β€œThe Carolina Panthers and Mr. Richardson take these allegations very seriously and are fully committed to a full investigation and taking appropriate steps to address and remediate any misconduct,” team spokesman Steven Drummond said.Β  β€œThe entire organization is fully committed to ensuring a safe, comfortable and diverse work environment where all individuals, regardless of sex, race, color, religion, gender, or sexual identity or orientation, are treated fairly and equally. We have work to do to achieve this goal, but we are going to meet it.”

Because this matter is under an ongoing legal review, the Carolina Panthers cannot comment publicly on the specifics of the allegations.

β€œErskine Bowles is a trusted leader of unquestioned integrity. We look forward to this report, which we know will be honest and thorough,” Drummond said.
