Few showers & storms Wednesday, sharp cooldown ahead
Lows will likely dip into the 40s around the Metro for the first time since April as we wake up Friday morning.
Happy Hump Day! Our Wednesday morning is off to a wet start as a cold front slices through the Carolinas this afternoon. While clouds and rain chances linger throughout the day, most locations remain dry beyond sunrise as the front passes to the east. Much cooler and drier air begins filtering into the WCCB Charlotte viewing area overnight into Thursday morning as we wake up to the 40s and 50s; wind chills in the High Country likely dip well into the 30s. Highs will struggle to get out of the 50s and 60s across the board on Thursday before the coldest night many of us have seen since mid-April. High Country communities above 3500′ may see their first frosts of the season as lows dip into the upper 30s, while the Piedmont shivers to the tune of the mid-to-upper 40s.
The weekend ahead looks a bit warmer and drier as highs swell back into the 60s and 70s across the western half of the Carolinas. While most models keep us completely dry between Thursday and Monday of next week, we’ll want to watch out for a coastal low that sweeps into the eastern Carolinas by Sunday morning. The vast majority of the moisture remains along the coast or over the Atlantic, but a few showers could sneak into the Sandhills (Richmond, Anson, Chesterfield counties) as we close out October’s second weekend.
Meanwhile, in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Jerry formed late Tuesday morning roughly 1500 miles east of the Caribbean. The storm will jog northwestward over the coming days and could bring some heavy rain and gusty winds to the Leeward Islands as it skirts to their northeast. While Jerry will not impact the Carolinas directly as it swirls toward Bermuda, rough swells, rip currents, and beach erosion could all pose issues for the East Coast this weekend into next week.
