NEWTON, N.C. – An infant child died Wednesday after a car crash in Catawba County last weekend, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred around 9:10 p.m. on Saturday in Newton on Settlemyre Bridge Road near White Oak Drive.
Troopers said a Nissan Altima crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an Infiniti Q50.
The Infiniti driver, 22-year-old Isrrael Suarez-Hernandez, was critically injured and transported to a hospital by a medical helicopter. Another adult and two children in the car were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
One of the children died from their injuries on Wednesday, troopers said. No update was given on the condition of the other occupants.
The Nissan driver, 40-year-old Christopher Houser, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, troopers said.
Impairment and speed were contributing factors in the crash, the highway patrol said.
