Is Tonya Harding Misunderstood?
The New York Times has a new article called “Tonya Harding Would Like Her Apology Now.”
The disgraced Olympic figure skater, according to Times journalist Taffy Brodesser-Akner, wants people to understand her side of the Nancy Kerrigan attack.
As in: not guilt or innocence – but respect, mitigating circumstances, how we treat people, and what we expect from them in the first place.
The journalist writes that because Harding is so recognizable, “She is left to explain herself endlessly and hope that someone is listening.”
And a lot of people are listening.
The new movie “I, Tonya” was nominated for three Golden Globes on Sunday, including Margot Robbie for Best Actress and Best Movie Musical or Comedy.
It won one: Allison Janney for Best Supporting Actress.
Tonya says she loves the movie and calls it magnificent, because she says it shows more of her life – the abuse she endured, the threats, just how poor she was.
