Temperatures & rain chances rise this weekend, bitter cold lurks ahead

Many High Country communities will see their first measurable snowfall of the season between Sunday night and Tuesday morning - and some flurries could find their way into the lower elevations, too.

Happy Friday! Get ready for a major case of weather whiplash over the next several days as we round into the heart of November. Temperatures continue their crusade into above-average territory this Friday afternoon as highs rise near 70Β° once again across the Piedmont and Foothills. While some clouds will hang around through the early afternoon, mostly sunny skies take the reins later in the day. A passing cold front will bring scattered showers to the High Country overnight into Saturday, but rain chances will be isolated at best south of I-40 as we kick off the weekend. Despite the cold front, the mercury will rise even further this weekend as afternoon temperatures surge into the mid-70s around the Metro on both Saturday and Sunday.

We’ll see a few more opportunities for showers between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon as yet another cold front slices through the Carolinas within this timeframe. While opportunities for rain will be meager, a major cold snap lurks behind this system. Many mountain communities will see their first measurable snowfalls of the season between Sunday night and Tuesday morning, thanks to strong northwesterly flow. Highs will struggle to get out of the 20s, 30s, and 40s across the board on Monday; the last time the Queen City failed to crack 50Β° was on February 21st, 259 days ago. Any measurable snow will remain above 3000′, but models continue to suggest a few flurries could find their way into the lower elevations Monday night into Tuesday morning. Regardless of what happens, expect the first hard freeze of the season around the Metro to arrive Tuesday morning as lows dip into the teens and 20s across the board.
