Rain overnight with cold air on the way

We’ve got quite the weather roller coaster ahead as we head into the weekend and early next week.Β

Friday night into Saturday, a weak cold front slides through, bringing a few light rain showers mainly across the Mountains. Some of those showers could linger into early Saturday morning, but once the front moves out, sunshine returns quickly. By late morning and through the afternoon, skies turn mostly sunny and temperatures climb into the mid-70s, making for a mild and comfortable day. The only catch will be the winds that will stay breezy with southwest gusts that could make it feel a bit cooler at times, but overall, it’s shaping up to be a pleasant Saturday once the early rain moves out.

As we move into Sunday, another front sweeps through, and this one will be a bit stronger. Expect gusty winds, especially in the Mountains where speeds could top 35 mph. Temperatures will start to dip later in the day as colder air begins to move in behind the front. By Sunday night, that cold air really takes overΒ withΒ a few flurriesΒ thatΒ could develop in the Mountains, though no significant accumulation is expected.

Monday brings a sharp change from the weekend warmth, with highs only reaching the 40sΒ and will beΒ the coldest day we’ve seen since late February. Despite plenty of sunshine, it’ll definitely feel more like winter than fall. The chill continues Monday night as temperatures drop well below freezing across the region, dipping into the 20s for the first time in Charlotte since March 3. Up in the Mountains, snow showers are expected to continue on and off from Sunday night through Tuesday, with light accumulations possible in higher elevations.

After a stretch of warm, breezy weather, the end of the weekend will definitely remind us that colder days are just around the corner.
