ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) — Zach Johnson survived a four-hole aggregate playoff to win the 144th British Open for his second major title. Johnson rolled in a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that got him into a three-man playoff, and he outlasted Louis Oosthuizen (LOO’-ee WUHST’-hy-zehn) and Marc Leishman (LEESH’-mahn) to win the British Open.

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) — Jordan Spieth (SPEETH) was in it until the very end in his bid to become the first golfer since Ben Hogan in 1953 to win golf’s first three majors. The 21-year-old Texan was tied for the lead until a bogey on the 17th hole ruined his chance to get into the three-man playoff.

ATLANTA (AP) — Nick Markakis (mar-KAY’-kihs) hit his first homer of 2015 and scored the go-ahead run on Juan Uribe’s (ur-REE’-bayz) fifth-inning single and the Atlanta Braves beat the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers 7-5. Jim Johnson earned his seventh save, but his streak of 18 consecutive scoreless outings ended when he allowed a ninth-inning run.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pittsburgh shortstop Jordy Mercer is expected to miss six weeks because of a sprained knee, leaving the Pirates without their starters on the left side of the infield possibly until September. Third baseman Josh Harrison went on the disabled list July 7 with a torn left thumb ligament and is expected to miss seven weeks.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed catcher A.J. Ellis on the 15-day disabled list with right knee inflammation and recalled rookie catcher Austin Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City. The Dodgers needed help at catcher. Yasmani Grandal left Sunday’s game after taking a ball off his mask.
