CHARLOTTE, NC – With below-freezing temperatures expected Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, the city has activated its inclement weather plans. All residents and guests are encouraged to use caution on roadways, sidewalks and around their homes and neighborhoods as surfaces may be slippery.
Following is an overview of major city services and the weather-related implications:
Charlotte Department of Transportation snow plows and large trucks will be treating major roadways throughout the night.
Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS)
- The light rail and Special Transportation Service are operating as scheduled.
- CATS will continue to treat station platforms, park-and-ride lots and other facilities with sand and ice-melting products.
- CityLYNX streetcar service is suspended until weather conditions improve.
- Some CATS bus routes are being detoured. Information about detours is available at ridetransit.org or 704-336-RIDE (7433).
Solid Waste Services (SWS)
- Residents should put their garbage and recycling carts at the curb on their normal day of collection and leave them until collected over the next week.
- Yard waste collection is suspended for the rest of the week.
Charlotte Water is standing by to ensure the community has continuous water service.

- After hours, callers are instructed to use the phone prompts to report leaks.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Wednesday press briefing has been tentatively rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 18, at 10:30 a.m., because of the inclement weather.
City of Charlotte offices will delay opening Thursday until 10 a.m.
