A large wildfire continues to expand across areas of Avery County. Emergency crews are currently on the scene in the Elk Valley community along Highway 194.
Avery County Emergency Management, and the NC Forest Service are responding to the fire that is currently not contained and is spreading quickly due to ongoing very dry conditions.
Those nearby should expect heavy smoke throughout the area, as emergency officials are trying to get some kind of containment. The National Weather Service has issued a special statement issuing an elevated fire risk will remain in place due to dry conditions and increasing warmth through the next few days.
