CMPD Warns Of Rising Car Thefts In The Charlotte Area
CHARLOTTE, NC — Car thefts are on the rise in Charlotte, and CMPD says the victims that are to blame in some of those cases.
Police say people are leaving their cars unlocked with the keys inside, or running while they warm up. Since January 1st, police say 238 vehicles have been stolen.
CMPD used a surveillance video showing a car being stolen from a north Charlotte gas station last October to illustrate their point. They say the theft happened after the driver left the keys in the ignition.
The suspect was caught, but police say the issue continues to be a chronic problem.
Police are partnering with QT stations to highlight the car theft problem. Next Tuesday morning, January 30th, you can get a free cup of coffee or drink if you show police your car keys.
