Local protestors organize ‘Free America Walkout’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Dozens of people packed First Ward Park in Uptown Charlotte Tuesday evening as a part of the National Free America walkout. The nationwide protests marked the end of the first year of President Trump’s second term.

“Lots of people need help right now even paying bills. Child care, trusted child care, trusted legal help,” Samantha Turner, State Coordinator for North Carolina Poor People’s Campaign said. “This isn’t the country we want. The people don’t want this. And we say, forward together. Not one step back.”

With more people facing economic uncertainty, increased immigration actions and ICE shooting and killing a Minnesota woman some people say they’re concerned about the direction of the country.

“At some point you got to do something because if it’s affecting you or not now, it’s eventually going to affect you sometime in the future,” Protestor Roddy St. King said.

The group marched the streets of Uptown to spread their message with CMPD officers clearing the way.

Some Trump supporters believe the country is in a better spot today than this time last year.

“We’re talking about safer border, we’re talking about low murder rates. We’re talking about, um, more take home pay this, this tax, this tax cycle. We’re talking about inflation under control,” Addul Ali, Past Chairman of the 12th District Republican Party said. “I just filled up my car with gas at 250 a gallon in Charlotte. I’m in a way better place.”

Protesters say they will keep trying to send a message.

“It’s happening all across the country. It’s clear you’re very much not popular. So eventually you’re going to have to answer, whether you like it or not,” Roddy St. King, Protestor said.
