UNC Charlotte Student Is Out Of Jail On Bond After Being Arrested For Threatening To Shoot Up The School
CHARLOTTE, NC.– A UNC Charlotte student is out of jail on bond after being arrested today for threatening to shoot up the school.
UNC Charlotte Police say this all started when 20-year-old Matthew Saavedra made concerning comments to his doctor and officers. Police got a search warrant for his apartment, and although they didn’t find any firearms or explosives, they found documents that they say are upsetting.
“We face these threats that occur and there aren’t always clear lines of prosecution and things like that it is difficult,” says UNC Charlotte Police Chief Jeff Baker.
UNC Charlotte police first learned about a threat made by 20-year-old student Matthew Saavedra last week to shoot up the school. He was then voluntarily committed to a hospital in Winston-Salem. UNC Charlotte Police took out a warrant and Sheriff’s deputies in Forsyth county arrested him Tuesday.
After searching Saavedra’s apartment, officers found no firearms or explosives, but did find documents they say were upsetting. They confiscated his laptop, and are waiting to get a search warrant to see what’s on it.
