Suspect Accused Of Shooting Grandfather In Custody After A Nearly 8-Hour Standoff With Police
SHELBY, NC — The man accused of shooting his grandfather Monday afternoon and then barricading himself inside a home for nearly eight hours is now in custody.
The shooting happened just before 1:30pm on S. Lafayette Street near Hope Community Church. According to police, the grandfather of the suspect was shot twice while trying to drive away after an argument and crashed into the side of the Church.
The victim was airlifted to CMC for surgery. His current condition is unknown.
Police say the grandson ran into a home on S. Lafayette when officers arrived and barricaded himself inside.
Officials say he surrendered an AR-15 during the negotiations, but have not confirmed whether that was the weapon used in the shooting.
Shortly before 9pm, the suspect was finally taken into custody without further incident. The names of the suspect and victim have not yet been released.
