Good matchup in St. Louis tonight

UNDATED (AP) — A makeup game is taking place in St. Louis tonight involving two division leaders. The home-standing Cardinals top the National League Central Division and all of baseball with a record of 60-34. The visiting Kansas City Royals lead the American Central as well as the entire American League with a mark of 57-36. The game is a makeup for a contest postponed on June 14. Two eight-game winners will work from the mound, Chris Young for the Royals and John Lackey for the Cards. Coincidentally, Lackey was slated to start the game that was rained out last month.

The Orioles get a final chance to beat the Yankees in New York this afternoon. After dropping the first two games of a three-game set the Orioles are pitching Ubaldo Jimenez (yoo-BAHL’-doh hih-MEN’-ez) against Masahiro Tanaka. By dropping the first two the O’s have fallen six games back of the first-place Yankees in the AL East.

In other afternoon games the Tigers are hosting the Mariners, the Angels are going for their eighth straight win with a home date against the Twins and the Blue Jays are at Oakland. The Jays by the way are in second place in the AL East, 5 ½ back of the Yankees.

After taking two of three from the second-place Mets at home, first-place Washington of the NL East hits the road for a series in Pittsburgh. The Nationals top the Mets by three games while the Pirates are six back of the Cards in the NL Central. That said, despite being so far back of St. Louis, the Pirates are tied with the Dodgers for the second most wins in the National League with 54. They’d be in first place in four of the six divisions in baseball with their record.

The Mets are home this evening to the Dodgers, who top the NL West with a record of 54-42. LA’s Clayton Kershaw takes a 20-inning scoreless streak into the game.

The remaining games tonight feature the Indians home to the White Sox, the Red Sox in Houston, Milwaukee at Arizona and the Padres entertaining the Marlins.

This is the final major of the year on the Champions Tour. Jeff Maggert won the U.S. Senior Open and Regions Tradition, Langer took the Senior Players Championship, and Colin Montgomerie won the Senior PGA Championship.

OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) — Bubba Watson has the lead early in the first round of the PGA’s Canadian Open. The two-time Masters champ is 6-under after nine holes, one shot in front of Ken Duke.

South Africa’s Tim Clark was the winner last year. He birdied five of the last eight holes for a one-stroke victory over Jim Furyk (FYOOR’-ihk).
