CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte area residents will have access to free ultrasounds on May 5th thanks to a partnership between several community health and wellness organizations.
A Health and Wellness Fair will be hosted by Christopher’s House of Refuge in partnership with Viason and Mecklenburg Heart Specialists. The event will take place on Saturday, May 5, 2018 between 10am and 2pm at the Carole A. Hoefner Center on E. 6th Street in Uptown.
Te fair will give residents access to health services ranging from neurological assessments and spinal screenings to breathing tests.
Paula Dallas-Speight, Executive Director of Christopher’s House of Refuge says, “Access to needed health screening was a top priority for us in establishing this event. We are excited to announce our partnership with Viason and Mecklenburg Heart Specialist to bring free ultrasounds to the great residents of Charlotte.”
A variety of ultrasounds will also be offered at the event, but pre-registration is necessary. Available ultrasounds include:
- Echocardiogram: an ultrasound evaluation of the heart that screens for congestive heart failure, enlargement and function of the heart, valve disease and congenital abnormalities.
- Carotid Artery Screening (stroke screening): an ultrasound evaluation of the carotid arteries that screens for building up of fatty and calcified plaque, which is the leading cause of stroke.
- Ankle Brachial Index (ABI): this is a blood pressure test checking for peripheral vasular disease, which is a disease of the arteries that reduces the arterial circulation to the legs.
- The Aorta screening uses ultrasound to look at the size and blood flow of the Abdominal Aorta. This screening will make sure a person does not have a life threatening Aneurysm.
