Record heat before Thursday storms

Tracking record-breaking temperatures

If you thought the record high yesterday was impressive, then prepare to be impressed once again! More record-breaking temperatures are expected in the Queen City today with highs soaring into the mid to upper 80s. This will shatter the old record of 82 set back in 1976! It’s a perfect day to trial run any summer outfits you are hoping to wear in the months ahead. Today will be exactly that, a trial run as colder temperatures make a brief return for our Thursday.

A cold front to our west will slowly approach our region through the day today. It will arrive by tomorrow morning with showers and even a few embedded thunderstorms. Luckily, the timing will work in our favor as the atmosphere will be stable in the am hours, helping to limit the severe weather threat. The downside to this is that rain will be plentiful for the morning commute. So grab the umbrella and rain jacket tomorrow morning. Another important caveat to this frontal system is the temperature forecast. Temperatures will peak in the morning in the mid to upper 60s before rain moves in. Once the rain clears by the afternoon, winds will shift out of the north and much cooler air will funnel into the region. Afternoon temperatures will be stuck in the 50s for the Piedmont and upper 30s for the High Country.

This cool down will peak Friday morning where temperatures will reach the 30s for the first time since February! The good news is this cold spell won’t last long as Friday afternoon highs reach back into the 60s with plentiful sunshine. 70s and sunshine return for your Saturday forecast.

The next rain chance arrives Sunday into Monday. This looks to proceed another cold front that will really drop temperatures back to winter levels by Tuesday of next week. So as much as today’s weather will try to lure you into planting, don’t do it yet! Get out there, enjoy today, and stick with your weather wise team for the latest!
