The Edge: Pentagon spends billions on crab legs, lobster tails, and fancy flutes
WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Pentagon is facing scrutiny tonight after reports of a massive end-of-year spending surge under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. A watchdog analysis group called “Open the Books” shows the Department of Defense spent more than $93 billion in the month of September. Supporters say large purchases are normal for the world’s biggest military and point to the government’s “use-it-or-lose-it” budget rule, which encourages agencies to spend remaining funds before the fiscal year ends. Critics say the optics are tough to ignore.
