Some New Features for Fans at The Wells Fargo Championship
CHARLOTTE, NC — Wednesday is the Celebrity Pro-Am at Quail Hollow Club. Organizers say this year’s Wells Fargo Championship is bigger and better than ever, with some new twists for fans, and the return of Tiger.
“When Tiger committed, it does amplify it to another level,” says Wells Fargo Championship Tournament Director Garry Sobba.
The Tiger Woods effect means more tickets sold, more attention and more traffic.
“We’ve got an aggressive plan with buses,” says Sobba. “You know we’ve certainly upped our bus count when Tiger committed. We’ve met with our concessionaire multiple times, because certainly the gallery changes, and so forth. But I think we’re in a very good position.”
Woods is back in the Wells Fargo field for the first time since 2012. but he’s not the only new wrinkle
“These things are smoking 24 hours a day,” says Danny Schisler. “At least 400 butts, and I couldn’t tell you how many hot dogs and grilled pieces of chicken.”
The tournament added local food trucks in the Green Mile Village.
Schisler, from Union County, has the 100 Main Beef and Barbecue truck cooking for his biggest crowds ever.
“They did tell us that if Tiger is coming, because when we set this up they didn’t know,” says Schisler. “They said if he comes, then it’s going to be a whole new ball game.”
“I’m the man to see,” says Dave Trauner with the Stick and Cones Ice Cream truck. “I’m the man to see.”
With warmer days in the forecast this week, Mint Hill’s Trauner is ready to keep you cool.
“This is the biggest event we’ve done, and we can’t wait for the crowds to get here,” he says.
Another new, cool feature for fans at the Wells Fargo is the mobile device policy. Guess what? You can now bring your cell phone to the course. You can text, take pictures, shoot video. Just be respectful of the golfers. You don’t want Tiger yelling at you.
“Have it on silent,” says West Palm Beach, Florida resident Steve Antolik. “Just kind of have some situational awareness about what’s going on.”
Fans can also hit up the Top Golf Expo Area, … a Saturday night concert on the course and a new, self-guided walk around the grounds.
Some are already taking advantage, before things heat up on Thursday.
“To have the access today, and not fight the crowds and stuff like that,” says Rock Hill resident Brad Glover. “Seeing the players up close.”
