Family Dollar to close distribution center in Matthews, cut over 300 employees

Discount retail store Family Dollar plans to close its distribution center in Matthews, eliminating hundreds of jobs.

A WARN notice was filed to the state on March 16 to shut down the distribution center on Monroe Road and to lay off 373 people.

The move comes nearly one year after Family Dollar was sold to a pair of private equity firms. Family Dollar also moved its headquarters from Matthews to Chesapeake, Virginia in 2018.

The Matthews distribution center will shut down by Aug. 12, 2026.
