An eight-year-old girl riding her bike was hit and killed by a driver with a revoked license in north Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
It happened around 6 p.m. Saturday on Monmouth Drive near Dalecrest Drive. When police arrived at the scene, they located a damaged bike and eight-year-old Nyomi Summers severely injured in the road.
Police said 23-year-old Khaliyal Burney, operating a Chrysler 300, was driving south on Monmouth Drive when Summers entered the road from the yard of a nearby home. The Chrysler struck the front of the bicycle, ejecting Summers into the road, according to police.
Medic transported Summers to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Burney was found not to be impaired, but police said they are investigating if speed was a contributing factor. He was arrested and charged with driving while license revoked, no liability insurance, failure to register, and fictitious registration.
This remains an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Worthy at 704-432-2169 Extension 4 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
