UNION COUNTY, NC — Union County Public Schools announced Friday that they will close on May 16th for an optional teacher workday.
The decision came after nearly half of the district’s teachers requested the day off to travel to Raleigh to participate in a statewide rally for better pay and better school funding. Officials say that many absences creates safety and security concerns for the schools.
UCPS has provided an updated schedule for testing, after school programs, athletics, and more due to the closure.
- End-of-Grade, End-of-Year and Advanced Placement testing for May 16 will be rescheduled.
- Marvin Ridge High will administer International Baccalaureate (IB) exams as planned.
- Due to the number of instructional hours in the UCPS Calendar, students will not be required to make up the day.
- School Nutrition Services will open six sites for students to eat breakfast and lunch. Meals will be served from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Sardis, Rocky River, Walter Bickett and Wingate elementary schools and Monroe and East Union middle schools.
- The UCPS After School Program will operate on a Teacher Workday schedule for registered ASP students.
- All athletic activities will follow normal schedules for teacher workdays.
