Fire in Kannapolis is 90 percent contained, no word yet on how it started
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – A fire burning in a wooded area in Kannapolis is now 90 percent contained. It started Monday near Pinewood Avenue, west of Kannapolis Lake, and burned around 50 acres before being contained. No homes have been affected.
There’s no word how the fire started, but Kannapolis Fire Chief Tracy Winecoff says people need to take the ongoing burn ban seriously. He says, “The situation is pretty severe we’ve had you know multiple calls for outbuildings burning where people started burning brush or burning leaves thinking they could keep it in control, and then the winds picks up just like it’s picking up now and it extends past their garden hose and next thing you know it’s in their neighbor’s yard.”
Kannapolis Fire is working with the forestry service to make sure the fire stays within containment lines. They expect to be on scene for several more days.
