WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. military’s top commander says he’s open to calling in ground troops to fight ISIS, if needed. The White House quickly responded saying the U.S. will not deploy ground troops in a combat role. The remarks came during a Senate hearing on the threat of ISIS militants.
“This counter-terrorism campaign we’re undertaking now isn’t like anything we have ever seen before. There are some good comparisons. They’re not one-to-one comparisons, but it’s certainly not the Iraq war,” said Deputy State Department Spokesperson Marie Harf.
The White House plans to ask Congress for $500 million to train, arm and equip about 5,000 moderate Syrian rebels for one year.
