Waiting for Autopsy Results in Chesterfield Baby’s Death

CHESTERFIELD, S.C. – Down a dirt road in Chesterfield, sits a small white house. Plywood in the windows. An Easter wreath still hanging on the door. And now, a new decoration near the road: a wooden cross, in memory of the baby who used to live here, 11-month-old Harlee Lewis. The baby girl’s body was found near the home, inside a diaper box, Tuesday afternoon.

Now, her 19-year-old mother, Breanna Lewis, is charged with filing a false police report, the desecration of human remains, and hiding the baby’s body. Three charges so far, maybe more to come, once investigators can determine how the baby died.  She was given a $71,000 bond.

Harlee’s autopsy happened Wednesday morning. “And we’re waiting on the results of the autopsy. It may take a while because we have to send evidence to a lab for analysis, and that may take a while,” says Chesterfield Co. Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Cambo Streater.

Investigators tell WCCB they continue to interview Lewis and her family members. Meantime, one of the detectives who discovered baby Harlee’s body is speaking out. Major Briana Davis is a 22-year law enforcement veteran. She says she has seen dead children before, but not like this. “This was the first time I actually found a child in a garbage bag, in a box, in a wooded area. That was tough. That was tough,” she says.

Davis, a mom herself, says she went home and hugged her seven-year-old daughter. Wednesday, that new wooden cross outside the home where Harlee Lewis once lived, a somber reminder of a young life, cut short. Davis says, “It’s difficult because you think about what if this was your family? What if that was me?”

Lewis remains in police custody. No court dates have been set for her yet. We’ve requested a copy of the 911 call she made, to falsely report her baby missing Tuesday. So far, that has not been released.
