Meck. Co. Sheriff Garry McFadden reopening Jail North to relieve overcrowding

MECKLENBURG CO., N.C. – The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office is reopening Jail North. The facility on Spector Drive closed in 2022 due to staffing shortages.

Sheriff Garry McFadden says the space is needed because of overcrowding at the main jail. Nearly 300 inmates are being held in overflow areas, using stack-a-bunk sleeping arrangements.

The Sheriff’s Office says it will immediately hire 50 new detention officers, with yearly salaries starting at $68,000 with a $7,500 signing bonus.
