Meck. Co. Commissioner calls reports of NCDOT scrapping I-77 toll lanes project “punitive and premature”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A major fight over the future of the I-77 South toll lane project is heating up. Charlotte-Mecklenburg leaders are pushing back against reports the project could be removed from the state’s transportation plan.

In a statement posted on X on Thursday, At-Large County Commissioner Leigh Altman called the move “punitive and premature.” She goes on to say the community deserves more time for an independent review of NCDOT’s managed lane proposal.

She argues trust between residents and the state has broken down.

Last week, the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization voted to rescind support for the controversial I-77 South toll lane project.
