Mayor Vi Lyles may not leave office on June 30, as previously announced
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mayor Vi Lyles is not leaving City Hall just yet. In an email to city council on Wednesday, Mayor Lyles says she won’t leave until a successor is picked.
Lyles wrote, in part, “I previously communicated that my final day would be June 30. However, during the process of recruiting and appointing the next Mayor, I will remain in my official capacity as Mayor until my successor has been appointed.”
Earlier this month, the five-term mayor said she would be stepping down at the end of June, which is less than halfway through her latest term.
Charlotte City Council will open applications for interim mayor on June 2. They aim to name the interim mayor on June 22.
