An investigation is underway after an inmate died at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriffβs Office.
JaβLan Riddick, 21, was found unresponsive in a housing unit at the jail by a detention officer around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Riddick received lifesaving measures but was pronounced dead shortly after.
βThe death of any individual under our care is a heartfelt matter, and it deeply affects us all,” said Sheriff McFadden. “We have notified Mr. Riddickβs next of kin and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”
A cause of death has not been determined at this time. Riddick had been in custody at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center since March.
The State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.
