Five Children Arrived In South Carolina From The Border Now In Foster Care
CHARLOTTE, NC.– Five children who were ripped from their families at the border– are in South Carolina. Many are wondering what’s next for them and the thousands of others.
Lutheran Services Carolinas tells WCCB young children ranging from 5-11 years old were torn from their families at the border. They were then taken into foster care in South Carolina in May. Two of them may be related, the other three are not.
Some of the children came with contact information for the parents, but not all were so lucky. Immigration attorney Lisa Diefenderfer says these kids could be stuck if they don’t get legal counsel.
“These are kids, so they might not have permission to do things without their parents. So they might be stuck in this grey area where they can’t do anything,” says Diefenderfer.
The executive order President Trump signed Wednesday, stopping the separation of migrant families at the border, does not address the more than 2,300 children who have already been separated from their parents under the “zero tolerance” policy.
“There is no plan as to what happens with them now. Children are being transferred from the border to various centers around the country.”
